A Hometown Original Made New
Payne Street Cottage is a historical home that was originally built in 1932 and located in the heart of Auburn, Alabama. Walking distance to the stadium was a huge attraction when the owner originally purchased the home in 2019. This is when JMC was contracted to design and construct a new home with a new vision while maintaining the integrity of the original cottage style.
This whole house remodel was one of our favorite transformations. We removed the entire second floor, raised the roof height and reconstructed it with dormers to allow natural light while updating the entire upstairs space adding storage, new bathrooms, bedrooms and gathering area.
On the main level we completed an addition to the rear that included master bath, closets, laundry and pantry, enlarged the front porch, took the kitchen and family room to an open concept, built out a custom under the stair bar area, reworked the stairs due to head height issue, added a large outdoor deck to the rear and a 2 car garage with office space and bath that compliments the original house.
There were some sentimental offerings to the project that set it apart from a standard remodel. A rare wood from the historical Wittle Dorm, AU’s first women’s dormitory, was used to build out the bar. In addition, the door slabs to enter into the master bathroom were original from the church the owners were married in. It is often the little touches that create such ambiance in a home.
